SwiftCharge South Africa

At a charger? Need help?

Step-by-step SwiftCharge charging help: plug in, start with the app, QR or a linked NFC card, or use a supported bank-card terminal.

Start here. We’ll guide you.

Plug in first.
Then choose how to charge.

Already parked at a SwiftCharge charger? Pick your payment method below and follow the arrows. Check the connector number and price before starting.

01
SwiftCharge account

App, mobile site or linked NFC card

Have your account ready with enough charging credit. NFC cards must already be linked to your account and supported by the charger.

  1. 1

    Plug in your vehicle

Park at the correct bay and connect the cable firmly to your EV. If the charger has a socket, connect your compatible cable at both ends. Check that your vehicle is ready to charge.

  2. 2

    Choose your way to start

    • QR: scan the charger’s QR code, sign in and follow the start prompts.
    • App or mobile site: choose this charger and connector, then start the session.
    • NFC: tap your linked SwiftCharge NFC card on the charger’s NFC reader, where supported.

Your SwiftCharge NFC card is different from a bank card.

  3. 3

    Confirm it is charging

Wait for the charger or vehicle to show charging has started. Track your session in SwiftCharge. Charging continues until your vehicle’s charge limit is reached, your available credit or chosen session limit is reached, or you stop it.

  4. 4

    Stop, unlock and go

Stop through SwiftCharge or your vehicle. Wait for charging to stop and the connector to unlock, then unplug safely. Your session history shows the final energy and amount after the charger confirms completion.

02
At chargers with a bank-card terminal

One tap. Ready to charge.

No SwiftCharge wallet top-up is needed for this option. Use the separate payment terminal and follow its instructions.

  1. 1

    Plug in your vehicle

Connect the charging cable firmly to your EV first. Note the charger and socket number so you select the correct connector on the payment terminal.

  2. 2

    Select your socket and tap

Follow the terminal’s prompts, select your connector and tap your bank card when asked. R350 is temporarily pre-authorised for this payment flow. Check the amount shown on the reader before approving.

The hold reserves funds; it is not the final charging bill. Follow any PIN or bank verification prompts.

  3. 3

    Charge without another tap

Wait for charging to be confirmed. The session runs until the vehicle’s charge limit or the terminal’s session limit is reached, or you stop it. The pre-authorisation does not buy unlimited charging.

A selected vehicle limit may be below 100%. Meter reporting and stopping time can cause a small amount of overrun beyond a requested stop target.

  4. 4

Stop once. Pay the final amount.

Stop using your vehicle or the terminal’s stop option, if offered. You do not need to tap your bank card again to end the session. Wait for the connector to unlock before unplugging.

The payment provider captures the confirmed final charging amount from the hold. Your bank releases the unused portion; its timing depends on your bank.

Comparison figures, not a countdown. Times are ideal constant-power calculations using the battery shown and the lower of the charger rating or the car’s DC limit. Real charging usually takes longer as power falls, and depends on battery temperature, shared power and charger voltage/current. A 240 kW charger cannot exceed your car’s limit.

How to read the guide

Battery: kWh measures stored energy; kW measures charging power. We use usable capacity where available. “Nominal” is the manufacturer’s total/rated capacity, so that calculation is a rough comparison and may overstate the energy needed. Check your exact trim and model year.

The calculation: battery kWh × 60% ÷ the lower of charger kW or vehicle DC kW × 60, rounded up to whole minutes. It assumes constant peak power, with no charging losses, taper or connection time. These are not manufacturer charging-time claims or guaranteed minimum/maximum times.

South African guide: calculations use the named battery version and prioritise local specifications. Where local charging data is incomplete, the row identifies an international specification or planning assumption. Preview rows do not confirm South African availability. All times remain estimates. AC-only and non plug-in hybrids cannot use these DC chargers.

Check the plug too: the charger’s power rating does not prove connector compatibility. First-generation Nissan Leaf models require CHAdeMO for DC charging; a CCS2-only charger will not fit. Confirm the connector and available power on the charger map.

Battery capacities and charging limits use model-specific manufacturer specifications, supplemented by the explicitly described assumptions. Reviewed 26 October 2026; specifications vary by market and year.

Something not quite right?

We’re here to help.

Have the charger name, connector number and session reference ready. Never send your PIN, full card number or account password.

The session says pending or the car has not started

Check that the cable is fully connected and the car’s charging schedule or battery limit is not preventing a start. Do not create another payment or tap again while the first start is uncertain. Contact support so the existing session and hold can be checked.

Charging stopped, but the amount still says finishing

The charger must confirm the final meter reading before the amount is final. This can take a little time. Do not begin a second payment to finish the first session. Contact support if the status does not update.

Will it always charge to 100%?

Your vehicle controls its charge limit, which may be set to 80% or another value. Charging can also end when credit or a session limit is reached, when you stop it, or because of a vehicle, charger or power interruption.

The connector will not release

Confirm charging has stopped, then use your vehicle’s unlock procedure. Never force the connector. Contact support if it remains locked. Use the emergency stop only for an actual emergency.
